This blog is intended as a place where information may be shared by parents, professionals, and educators who need help, or want to help others in understanding the diagnosis, the law as pertaining to an IEP (individual educational plan) and support when every strategy tried seems to have failed. I am seeking my own support group, so that we as parents might not only survive our "exceptional" kids but learn and grow doing it.
Today my daughter had an altercation with one of the neighbor kids, I am always amazed that this HF child can go out side, water plants and singing and inspire such rage from a neighbor girl. Of course my daughter is the one with problems and therefor the cause of all the problems. I do have a concern for the mother of this child, her youngest is also a HF child and I just wonder if she will fill the same way when her son is the one blamed by those parents of the "normal Kids".
I am in the process of acquiring ECHO services for my children threw tricare. What is that? tricare is what our medical insurance in the military is called. ECHO is additional funds that provide additional services to military dependent children with disabilities. I am trying to get ABA (applied behavior analysis) therapist who can work with my children one on one with in social settings. For Alura and Jason this will be in an extra curricular setting like drama club or a sports team. Sean I am looking for a business setting so that he could learn how to deal with a job, a boss , and co workers.
ReplyDeleteAs parents of the high functioning disabled it is often hard for us to get a recognition of our children's disfunction-alit y, let alone services for them that will allow them to reach any kind of potentially functional future. But with more and more children in the spectrum each, year those with the ability to have a future that can be self sufficient and productive members of society we need them to reach that because there are plenty of others who will require society to provide them with 24/7 care. This is a harsh reality but true just the same. Yet if you find your self with a child with disabilities the higher their function the less help you get. This philosophy makes no sense in the long term context of life. I do not advocate no intervention for the severally disabled, I just think we need to be realistic and recognize when a person has Plato-ed in development and turn our resources to help those who while delayed in skills don't Plato but still gain skills that will allow them to be self sufficient and productive members of society. Less than 50% of a population cannot support the rest.
